Holiday Romance!
www.amazon.com/dp/B017WHH3BC

She doesn't know who she is or why she's come to Colorado Springs. Dustin has no idea why he's met her.  Kayla whispers that her name is Ruby--if he can believe the voice of a spirit in the night.  Separate tragedies, years apart, form an invisible blond between Ruby and him.  A chance encounter?  Or a match made in Heaven?  Only Kayla knows for sure...

Excerpt
All Dustin wanted to do was go home and take a nap.  He deserved that, didn’t he?  Hadn’t he done enough chivalrous shit for one day?  Driving away from the hotel, he felt guilty for leaving Brandy—or whoever the hell she was.  Why hadn’t he minded his own business in Lutz’s?  No one else cared that she was crying.  Why had Janette sat him in the booth near Brandy’s?  Why hadn’t he plopped his ass on a stool at the counter like he usually did?
Damn it, KaylaGet out of my head.  Stop trying to be my moral compass...
Dustin slowed at the first intersection, swung into a gas station, and turned his truck around.  He knew he should go back to the shop to pick up his SUV, but he didn’t have time.
When he entered the hotel, he didn’t see her.  He approached the desk clerk.  “Excuse me.  Did the lady who was here check in yet?”
“She went to the restroom.”
Dustin headed down a hallway.  He halted at the correct door, knocking.  “Brandy, are you in there?”
She came out, her eyes red-rimmed.  “Did you forget something?” she asked, sniffling.
He commandeered her suitcase.  “Yeah—you.  Look, I can’t leave you here, okay?  Not in your present state of mind.”
“Don’t make me go to the police, Dustin.  They’ll think I’m nuts and have me locked up.”
“I want you to stay with me, at least until we can make some sense out of this.”
“Is it all right with your…significant other?”
“Yeah, she’s on board.  Believe me.”
She trailed him into the lobby.  “I’m sorry to be such a pain.  I know you didn’t ask for this, to be burdened with a stranger who has amnesia, and I…”
“Please, stop crying and stop apologizing.  I’m not the saint you make me out to be.”
“But you’re helping me, and you don’t have to.”
“That’s where you're wrong, Brandy.  Sometimes, we have no choice in the matter.”

New Release
www.amazon.com/dp/B0166XQZ5I

On crutches and no longer able to fly jets, Brett is grateful to have come home alive instead of in a box. Though he’s still got his leg, there’s a lot of pain, too so a relative sends him to see the pretty herbalist who helps people with pain and nerve problems. One look at her and Brett wants more than pain relief.

Nikee has a secret room beneath her greenhouse full of pot plants. The woman began growing medical marijuana several years ago to help her father after a bad accident, and she has no plans to quit. Hopefully telling Brett about the grow operation won’t cost her a relationship with the man.

If the tender balance of her relationship with Brett isn’t enough, someone else has discovered her secret. He wants her crop and will do anything to cash in on her work, but Nikee can't go to the Troopers for help.

Can a woman, an old man, and an ex-jet jock keep the nefarious character out of her medicinal pot?

Excerpt from Grass and Blue Skies...

The memory of the fear slammed into her as fresh as it had been all those years ago. She and Tore only had one parent left and didn't want to lose their father. Watching him deal with the pain daily turned her into a terrified, withdrawn wreck.

All thoughts of normal teenage things had gone out of her head. She and Tore dashed home from school as soon as dismissed. At least Tore had a driver's license. He drove over to her middle school as soon as possible. Nikee waited bouncing from foot to foot, ready to run home.

The necessity to get home as quickly as possible wasn't just to reassure themselves of their father's health, they had chores to do on the farm. It was up to them to keep the place afloat. The summer she turned fifteen they began discussing the mechanics necessary to change the farm over to a u-pick operation. That was the summer Einar discovered pot had its uses.

That winter she and Tore dug out the old root cellar. They used the earth they excavated to smooth out the holes and level the area where the greenhouse now stood.

"Nikee?" Brett's voice cut into the memories.

"Okay. Well, friends of Tore's kept us supplied through the winter with pot for Dad. Tore, and I excavated the root cellar out on our own. Come spring we got seeds from his friend and I began the grow operation. Tore, and I built the greenhouse with help from his buddies. I learned how to grow pot and we turned the farm into a u-pick place."

"This set up was designed to help your father then?"

With a deep sigh, Nikee shook her head. "You're asking if that's all we ever did, and the answer is no. Tore never wanted to be a farmer. It's not what he was meant to do for the rest of his life. I, we grew enough to get the down payment for the boat for him. Then we shut down that part of the operation. Yes, I grew weed for people who only wanted to smoke to get high."

Afraid to see his expression, she slouched down against the wall behind her. Tears distorted her vision and pooled in her eyes. Nikee brushed them away with her right hand.

"Are you angry with me?" she finally got the courage to ask.

His thumb still caressed her hand. For a long space of time Brett remained silent. Finally, his whisper slid across the top of her head.

"I have no right to judge what you did. You kept your father alive, kept the farm and got your brother a boat. You did what you had to. For two kids, you did good. I've got one question for you, are you growing pot for stoners now?"

Cherime MacFarlane
Although born in New Orleans, I am proud to call myself an Alaskan. I have lived here since 1977. I have seen -40 degrees, hauled water, made bear bacon and I live in a cabin. I have used a fishwheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and roadie. I have cut firewood on shares. I worked as a cocktail waitress during pipeline days in a small lodge on the Richardson Highway.

My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I personally experienced hearing it from my in laws. When my husband got on the phone to Scotland, after 5 seconds I could barely understand a word.

We moved to Wasilla to get warm. It barely drops past -25 degrees here in the winter. I became a paralegal and worked for over 26 years for the same firm.

Alaska is my home. I never thought I would love it so much, I never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. My love and I were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years. I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with and was my biggest fan.

Nonfiction Friday
An interview with Mary A. Kardes...

Welcome to Indie Lindy, Mary.  It’s a pleasure to feature you as a guest author on my blog.  Please tell us a little about yourself.  Also, what are your favorite pastimes?

I was born in Chicago and have spent most of my life in the Metro-Chicago area.  I am married 39 years, have a beautiful daughter, and an incredibly smart and fun grandson.  I foster pets for the rescue group, Second Chance 4 Pets Network which is a great organization linked to Pet Finder.com.  I worked at the University of Chicago before I had to resign earlier this year to care for my husband who has been bravely battling severe neurological and autoimmune diseases for the past 13 years.  I am a Certified Research Administrator and was fortunate enough to have worked for a world-renowned virologist and with many foreign researchers who have become cherished friends.  Exposure to such diverse cultures provided a unique opportunity for the exchange of ideas about everything from national governments to regional religions, politics, sports, and customs.

Reading is my favorite pastime and spending time with family and friends is very important to me.  Traveling the U.S. has always been my passion though my travels have been curtailed greatly the past few years due to my husband's health issues.  Historical treasures and natural monuments dot this country from coast to coast.  Limitless points of interest, countless things to do, and a diverse population of people all contribute to a unique and unparalleled education.  A single lifetime is not adequate to experience all this nation has to offer.

What inspired you to write your book, America: Our Sacred Honor ?

The turning point in my life was September 11, 2001 as I watched the twin towers fall, the Pentagon attacked, and saw the smoldering pit in Pennsylvania created by the downing of Flight 93. The sheer terror of the victims and the profound sadness of their surviving relatives and friends are forever etched in my mind.  Subsequent celebrations by Muslims in the Middle East and even right here in the U.S. as well as some Americans saying that it was our foreign policy and our own fault that we were attacked prompted me to take a hard look at America and its place in the world.  I asked myself, "Why weren't there any warnings?" That question initiated my quest for answers, which led me on a research expedition examining socio-economic, political and religious America, Islam and the Middle East, the United Nations, and the "global community."  I discovered that there were warnings, numerous warnings from contemporary sources, ancestors, and from our very own history.

The book focuses on our federal government and the debate to "define" the Constitution in our modern world.  It addresses issues such as immigration, poverty, welfare, guaranteed freedoms, Islam's role in America, our military, and the dreaded government agencies.

How long did it take you to research and write the book?

My research began nearly 14 years ago and it will be a never-ending endeavor since the state of the nation and of the world for that matter is fluid.  I have read volumes of news articles and interviews.   I can't count the number of books I have read, historical documentaries I have watched, people I have talked to and notes I have taken.   I visited sites mentioned in the book. I have been to Washington, D.C. numerous times since I never tire of the monuments, museums, archives, and architecture.  I was there recently to attend the Judicial Watch Summit on political corruption, which was fascinating.  In the spirit of discovery, I have attended Heritage Foundation events in Chicago, a 10,000 person Tea Party rally in Illinois, an "Occupy DC" protest in action, and "School Choice" discussions and events just to name a few.   It took a long 5 years to write America: Our Sacred Honor due to intermittent periods of inactivity to focus on my husband's health problems.

Who is your intended audience?

A sister-in-law says I have a "conservative" slant.  I can't argue that point but I do know that some severe problems threaten our nation; problems that must be addressed by all Americans regardless of political party, political-leaning, race, religion, and gender.  The U.S. Constitution holds many of the answers. Writings and media encapsulated thoughts including council from our Founders and ancestors and extensively documented 20th century global events all serve as warnings that should not be ignored.

Do you have any new writing projects on the horizon?

Since I have spoken with so many women of different races and cultures during my years at the University of Chicago, I am interested in developing a women's forum on American issues.  Different races, education, political ideologies, cultures, and religions shape individual attitudes, expectations and priorities.  I am confident that such a diverse group of women: mothers, daughters, grandmothers, native-born Americans, and immigrants can successfully share experiences, views, priorities, and solutions.  Major changes have come about throughout history because of the words and actions of strong "common" women citizens.  We shall see where that leads.

Where can readers find America: Our Sacred Honor?

Books are available in hard copy, soft copy and eBook from my website, marykardes.com, barnesandnoble.com and amazon.com.

Blurb
America is “exceptional.”  It is unlike any country in history.  Its success, prosperity, growth, standard of living, and its spiritual soul would not have been possible anywhere else or with any other people.

Unfortunately, we have become paralyzed by political correctness.  We must stand up and defend our rights and the rights of our fellow countrymen.  We have squandered our freedoms and taken for granted the gifts of this nation.  We owe our children a strong vibrant nation, not the shadow of liberty we walk in now.

We need to unite under the banner of our own Constitution and work together to restore the dignity and strength of America.  Since our government in Washington DC cannot or will not do it, it is the duty of all Americans to defend our sacred gifts of independence and freedom.  We are Americans and it is our sacred honor.
